Heritage, tranquility and luxury by Limerick CityA Little Bit About Us

The Shannon River House Estate

The Shannon River House was built in 1901 and was also known as Parteen-A-Lax. This name derived from the pairing of the Celtic term for a small port or pier and the Viking term for salmon. This name gives a clue to the historical importance of this site on the River Shannon, the clue to the origins of the settlement and an insight into the heritage of the property. This unique house and gardens has a unique place in the lists of Clare, Limerick and Irish heritage bodies, with parts of the estate dating back over a millennium to the owners' direct ancestor, Brian Buru. The owners are the sixth generation in this house and are trying to restore the house, gardens, river banks and woodland to their former splendour after a period of neglect.

The family is dedicated to the refurbishment of the property, and as guests, you facilitate this work, for which the family is deeply grateful.

Parteen A Lax – A Riverside Estate with Heritage, Elegance, and Enchantment just outside Limerick City

Set along the tranquil banks of the River Shannon, Parteen A Lax and its eight acres of parkland, riverbank and gardens is only separated from the hustle of Limerick City by less than a mile of river.

Once part of the ancestral lands of the O’Brien chieftains, the estate carries echoes of a noble past—where ancient stone, whispered tales, and warm hospitality converge.

At the heart of the grounds lies a beautiful deconsecrated church, now a breathtaking venue for weddings, dinners, parties and special events. Surrounded by mature trees and moss-covered walls, it offers a sacred sense of place—perfect for unforgettable moments.

The estate commands the northern end of the ancient salmon weir, from which the house gets its viking name and overlooks the castle of the weir and St Thomas's Island, site of the Abbey of St Thomas Aquinas which was destroyed in the 16th century.

Once a private house, Parteen A Lax now invites visitors from around the world to feel the history from the comfort of its charming rooms and assortment of architectural styles. Guests may choose to stay in individually styled bedrooms, rent the entire Georgian main house, or reserve the full estate for exclusive gatherings.

The estate at Parteen A Lax is more than a retreat; it’s a place where stories live. While local folklore speaks of river spirits that once danced beneath the moonlight, of chieftains who held council beneath ancient oak woods, and of secret pathways that led to hidden wishing wells, Parteen A Lax invites you to add your visit to the estates history.
